ROMS Acronym in different Languages

#1 Unread post by arango »

We are in the process of designing the ROMS T-shirt for the upcoming workshop in Spain, Nov 2006. One idea that is growing on us is to spell ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System) in different languages with some figure related to Spain in the background. The examples below are in alphabetic order by language.

Alphabetic Translations:

Regional Ocean Modeling System (American English)
Ozeano Modelatze Sistema Erregionala (Baske)
Itsas Modelaketa Sistema Erregionala (Basque)
Sistema Regional de Modelat Oceànic (Catalan)
Modelski sustav za okrajnja mora (Croatian)
Regional Ocean Modelleringssystem (Danish)
Regional Ocean Modelling System (English)
Système de Modélisation Océanique Régionale (French)
Regionaalne Ookeani Modelleerimise Süsteem (Estonian)
Coras Reigiúnda Samhail na Mara (Gaelic)
Sistema Rexional de Modelado Oceánico (Galician)
Regionales Ozeanmodellierungssystem (German)
Sistem Pemodelan Laut Regional (Indonesian)
Sistema di Modellistica Oceanica Regionale (Italian)
Regionalt Havmodelleringssystem (Norwegian)
Sistema de Modelação de Região Oceânica (Portuguese)
Sistema de Modelação do Oceano Regional (Portuguese)
Sistema Regional de Modelação Oceânica (Portuguese)
Региональная модель океанских течений (Russian)
Sistema Regional de Modelado Oceánico (Spanish)
Regionalt Havmodelleringssystem (Swedish)
Bölgesel Okyanus Modelleme Sistemi (Turkish)

Since we have users from all continents, can you please give us the correct spelling in different languages. Online translators are not that accurate. In addition, acronyms are very difficult to translate. If you have special characters please send us a GIF, JPEG or any other graphical format. We are looking for translation in

Arabic
Cantonese
Traditional Chinese
Dutch
French
Finnish
Greek
Hebrew
Hindi
Latin
Korean
Maori
Welsh

Any other languages are welcome? We will try to fit as many languages as we can on the T-shirt. In the list above, I was thinking exclusively in ROMS users so please forgive me if I missed some. All these languages have nice characters and sounds.

Please let me know if any of these have been mispelled by sending an e-mail to arango@marine.rutgers.edu with the correction. Notice that for some languages we have more than one translation. Please let me know which one is the most appropriate.

Thank you to all you that contributed with a translation :D

I think that should be

Regional Ocean Modelling System (English)
Regional Ocean Modeling System (American)

but in the interests of T-shirt bandwidth perhaps we can skip this level of granularity.

The meaning of ROMS in Spanish is given as

Sistema Regional de Modelado Oceánico

The question is, what is it that's regional, the system or the modeling? If the latter, then a more appropriate translation would be:

Sistema de Modelado Oceánico Regional
