About AIMS

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency.

Our research into some of Australia’s iconic marine ecosystems guides their management and that of similar systems around the world. We do marine science that has practical benefit to the real world, providing high quality, large-scale and long-term research that is used by governments, industry and the wider community to make informed decisions about the Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf and Arafura and Timor Seas.

AIMS researchers at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to the best tools and equipment like the National Sea Simulator, cutting edge laboratories and our fleet of research vessels.

About this Opportunity

As an experienced coastal oceanographer and modeller, you will conduct field and modelling based research to investigate issues into coastal and shelf processes across Australia’s Northern coast.

You will work across an inter-disciplinary team and contribute your research and technical skills to solve complex environmental problems. You will work with collaborators and external clients to address issues relevant to managing our northern marine ecosystems, and increase the impact of AIMS’ research capacity in northern Australia.

An attractive remuneration and benefits package is offered, comprising a salary range of $82,632 - $113,610, 15.4% superannuation, 9 day fortnight, generous leave entitlements and field allowances. This appointment will be for an initial period of 3 years and will be based at our Darwin research facility. A comprehensive relocation package will be offered.

About You

You will have an advanced level of understanding of oceanographic processes underpinned by a strong record of publications and/or industry reports commensurate with experience and be able to demonstrate:

An established or emerging reputation for research excellence in oceanography;
Well-developed skills in hydrodynamic modelling and the strong ability to interpret, and disseminate results of your research undertakings;
Excellent knowledge of, and strong background in, physical oceanography with a focus on coastal and shelf processes;
PhD or equivalent qualifications and experience in physical oceanography or a related field; and
Proven ability to lead and initiate quality research efforts, fostering a collaborative research culture amongst multi-disciplinary scientists.
