Hi,
I was wondering if there are any efforts to develop a coupler between ROMS and MPAS-A
(atmosphere component of MPAS). Would this make any sense?
It says on the MPAS website that they want (new) users to transition to it from WRF. Are you
expecting that this will at some point propagate downwards to regional coupled ROMS applications,
and if so, are there any concrete timeframes/roadmaps? Or will you continue to use WRF?
I still know almost nothing about weather models, and I'm a bit unsure if I should learn WRF or MPAS-A.
I want to simulate tropical cyclones. It'll be years before I actually need the coupled simulations,
and I'm thinking that by then, maybe
some group will have written a coupler to ROMS. So I'd rather slowly start learning MPAS-A now,
than invest effort in WRF that may be deprecated then. Do you have suggestions?
I saw that there is a regional version of the CESM:
https://ihesp.github.io/rcesm1/introduction.html
which used ROMS and WRF. If I understand the (non-regional) CESM website correctly, they will use the MPAS-A core in
there atmosphere component. Will this mean that at some point, their regional version will use
MPAS-A stuff too and they will couple it to ROMS?
I also found the Seahorce project:
https://seahorce-scidac.github.io/
but it says on the webpage that this integrates with E3SM, and on the E3SM site it says the
atmosphere component is the "E3SM Atmosphere Model (EAM)", and I'm not sure if this can do
regional applications with boundary conditions.
MPAS-A can already do regional simulations, I tried their tutorial.

Re: coupling to MPAS-Atmosphere model?
As I know, there is no ESMF/NUOPC cap for MPAS-A at this point. There are caps for MPAS-O and MPAS-Ice but those are generated for E3SM version of MPAS which I think it is not too different from NCAR's code base. At this point, we are looking for possibility to create generic NUOPC cap for MPAS that will serve to all MPAS components but it is not decided or materialized yet and discussion is still ongoing at NCAR side. If we go with that approach and start to implement NUOPC cap for MPAS-A, then it could be also used for the coupling with ROMS. Again, there is no any time estimate about the availability of MPAS-A NUOPC cap.

Good to know, thanks for the information!
